Welcome to our first floor bathroom, aka the "Prison bathroom". After coming home from a kayaking trip and having the floor sink in, we decided it was time to do some digging and fixing.

Even though the floor was clean, it has some very bad staining on the tile
This part went very fast! Cardboard laid down to stop the debris going into the drain
Those tiles are sharp!
Removing the mortar, metal mesh, and tar paper was much more time consuming
Cleaned up a bit
This is the first of THREE loads that went to the dump. A total of about 1,500lbs(!) was removed

After delaying for as long as I could, it was time to tear into the floor

Tar paper - wasn't very waterproof!
The more I dug in, the more soft, rotten wood came out
Trying to get down to decent wood

At this point, I discovered that the floor joist under the worst part was halfway rotten through. It needed to be replace, which means taking a trip into the very cramped crawl space to replace it.

Not excited
Easy to find with all of the damage and debris
Have I mentioned how amazing my fiancée is?
Looking up at the damage. Luckily it was only one joist that needed to be replaced
Getting the joist in place with the help of a ratchet strap
Very short crawl space
The joist in place - sitting on the sill and pier, and tied into the remnants of the old joist
Clearing up the rest of the subfloor
Ceiling and wall framed, walls bleached and mold blocking primer applied
New faucet installed and shower pan bedded in mortar
Electrical was stapled to the studs and shower surround installed
New drywall put up, corner beads applied with adhesive
Mud applied and time for sanding!
Sand sand sand

The next few steps took far too long, and I seem to have forgotten to take pictures of most of it... Tiles on the floor were added and grouted, the gaps in the corners were filled and sanded. Walls and ceiling was primed, and then painted. Caulk was also applied everywhere, including copious amounts on my hands...

All done!

I'm not an expert, this isn't instruction. Don't do what I do. kthx
